Pipeline Projects
The following projects demonstrate the scope of BL&A services and the depth of experience of our personnel. These projects have been undertaken since 2001. The company has particularly strong experience with development projects associated with significant controversy by providing sound scientific foundations for impact assessment and regulator assessment. Virtually all projects have involved vegetation and/or fauna habitat assessment and mapping.
Examples of Pipeline Projects include:
BL&A has experience in providing assistance to a variety of pipeline infrastructure projects, including water mains, gas pipelines and sewerage infrastructure. These include the following:
- Victorian Generator Project (Mortlake): Completed a flora and fauna assessment over a 78-kilometre proposed pipeline alignment between Port Campbell and Mortlake, in western Victoria. Key threatened species actually or potentially present were later subject to targeted spring surveys to assess the potential impacts upon their populations. Mitigation and avoidance measures were recommended for species such as Swamp Greenhood and Grey Goshawk
- Seagas Pipeline: Adelaide, South Australia (Ecos Consulting). : Prepared a detailed assessment of the potential impacts of a proposed gas pipeline on the Orange-bellied Parrot and listed migratory species to support a Referral under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
- Construction of water mains: Undertook two projects assessing water main alignments for their flora and fauna values. Mitigation measures were formulated in each case. The projects included:
- Cranbourne Water Main – a 1.1km alignment extending from Cranbourne Golf Course to Cranbourne Bypass;
- Clearwater Rise Water Main, Rose Grange Estate, Tarneit - checking the alignment where it crossed Skeleton Creek;
- Five kilometre section of Nar Nar Goon-Longwarry Road between Nar Nar Goon and Tynong in Melbourne’s outer southeast. It was proposed to construct a rising main sewer in the road reserve along this section of road;
- Osborne Street sewer alignment, Bacchus Marsh, north - west of Melbourne;
- Moorookyle sewer: flora and fauna assessment along this alignment at Tarneit;
- Woori Yallock sewer: fauna assessment and habitat evaluation;
- Grassland Avenue, Coburg, sewer alignment;
- Upgrading of the Shoreham sewerage system: assessment of the vegetation at over 100 proposed excavation sites;
- Yarra Glen to Coldstream sewerage pipe upgrades;
- Templestowe Sewer Backlog project: assessment of the vegetation.
- Completed a study in south Gippsland, Victoria, investigating flora and fauna at three reservoirs at Poowong, Korumburra and Fish Creek and two potential reservoir sites near Yarram and Toora.
- Willowgreen Sewer: Point Cook, VIC. Conducted a flora and fauna assessment of a proposed sewer route along Skeleton Creek at Point Cook. The assessment provided specific recommendations to mitigate potential impacts on the nationally significant Striped Legless Lizard and Growling Grass Frog.
- Monbulk Pipeline: Belgrave South, VIC. Undertook an investigation of the flora and fauna of a proposed sewer pipeline route at Belgrave South. The conservation significance of the route was determined and specific mitigation measures developed including detailed weed management.
